Metro Celebrates Safety at Annual Luncheon

479 safety awards earned by employees in 2015

CINCINNATI – More than 80 Metro operators and maintenance employees were recognized recently during Cincinnati Metro’s annual Safety Awards Luncheon for achieving outstanding safety milestones in safe driving and service.

In all, 479 employees received safety awards, including Operators Michael Cassinelli, Arthur Ginter and Thomas Shriver and Maintenance employees William Gilbert and Larry Greene who were each honored for having an amazing 25 years of accident-free service!

This year’s safety banquet was also particularly special for Operator Brian Oliver, who earned a ring for achieving 10 consecutive years of driving without a preventable accident.

“It was a big relief. It was something I had been working on for almost 20 years. Accidents do happen and I was cut short and had to start over again. Ten years consecutive is a tough deal to do,” said Oliver.

However, Oliver was determined to do it and wanted to carry on what has become a family tradition in the Oliver family. Oliver’s father, Paul, worked in public transit for 50 years and his brother, Johnathon, also retired from Cincinnati Metro. Both had earned rings for their commitment to safety.

“My dad passed about three years ago and he had given me his ring prior to his passing. He kind of joked and said, ‘Well, I guess you’ll never get your own,’ when he said that he winked and smiled at me,” Oliver said pictured above holding a photo of his father, Paul.

Oliver carried his dad’s ring with him to this year’s luncheon to accept his own safety ring and said that he knows his father is proud of him. Oliver’s dad not only drove a Metro bus, but also operated trolley buses and was one of the last Metro employees to have driven the streetcar before they went out of service in 1951.

“As a former bus operator I know the everyday challenges bus operators and maintenance employees face on the job,” said Cincinnati

Metro CEO Dwight A. Ferrell. “The fact that nearly 500 safety awards were earned last year is proof of our employee’s commitment to safety and excellence in serving our community every day.”
