S.O.R.T.A. Listening Session: Proposed Bike Trail on the Oasis Rail Line

The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) will hold a listening session to solicit public comments about the proposed temporary bike and pedestrian trail on the Oasis Line rail right-of-way, from The Montgomery Inn Boathouse to Lunken Airport.

Public invited to comment as part of comprehensive review

CINCINNATI – The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) will hold a listening session to solicit public comments about the proposed temporary bike and pedestrian trail on the Oasis Line rail right-of-way, from The Montgomery Inn Boathouse to Lunken Airport.

The one-hour listening session will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, 4-5 p.m., at The Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum, 3738 Eastern Avenue.  The Carnegie Center is served by Metro Rt. 28.

In December 2014, a special sub-committee of the SORTA Board was formed to explore the feasibility of using the Oasis Line for a temporary bike trail.  The sub-committee has been comprehensively reviewing options and discussing the proposed trail with stakeholders and transportation partners that would be affected by this initiative.

“The listening session is designed to seek the input of the public. I directed the sub-committee to get all of the facts, speak with our partners, explore all scenarios, seek the public’s input, and report back to the board,” said Jason Dunn, Chair of the SORTA Board.  “The SORTA board is only one of many stakeholders on this proposed project.  We can better determine our options after we have completed a comprehensive review of the issue.”

Background

The Oasis Line right-of-way was purchased in 1993 by SORTA and the Cincinnati Terminal Railway, now the Genesee & Wyoming (Indiana & Ohio) Railroad.  Federal and state of Ohio funds were used to purchase the right-of-way for future transportation purposes.

The railroad owns the south set of tracks and operates freight service on that portion of the Oasis Line.

The Oasis Line is a part of the Eastern Corridor multimodal transportation planning effort for future rail enhancements.
