Frequently Asked Questions about the Metro Discount Program

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Metro have entered into an agreement to offer students discount rides on Metro. Here are answers to questions about the program.

Q: How does the program work?

A: Current Cincinnati State students must swipe a special Cincinnati State*Metro discount card with photo to ride Metro. They must also pay a cash fare of $1 each time they ride, regardless of the zones of travel. This represents a significant discount over regular Metro fares that range from $1.75 for zone 1 up to $4.25 for zone 5. If students need a transfer, they may purchase one for $.50.

Q: How do I get a Metro discount card?

You can get your Metro discount card by visiting the Cincinnati State Web site and following the link to the registration page. There is no cost for this card. Once you register, your Metro discount card will be mailed to you within three to five business days in a plain white envelope.

Q: How often do I need to get a new card?

A: You will need to get a new card each semester. Passes for each semester will be valid from the date each semester begins up to, but excluding the first date of the following semester, as shown below:

Q: How does it work?

A: The Metro discount card is designed to be validated by the reader on the top of the farebox. When you swipe your Metro discount card through the pass reader, the farebox will make sure the pass is valid, and you’re on your way.

Q: Is this a free program?

A: Cincinnati State helps fund the Metro discount card program. Students pay an additional $1 fare each time they ride to help fund the program, plus $.50 for transfers if needed.

Q: Why can’t I just show my Cincinnati State ID?

A: Both Cincinnati State and Metro are concerned about fraudulent use of ID cards by people who are not currently Cincinnati State students. Allowing this type of unauthorized use is not fair to those who are valid students.

Q: Who is eligible for this program?

A: All current, active Cincinnati State students are eligible to receive a Metro discount card. This does not include past students or temporary program attendees.

Q: How will bus drivers know who is an eligible Cincinnati State rider?

A: All eligible students must have a valid Metro discount card to take part in this program. If the card is valid, the farebox will tell the operator to accept it.

Q: I don’t ride the bus but my friend does. Can I give my pass to her?

A: No. Metro discount cards are for use by current, active students only. The Metro discount card has a photo of the registered user to prevent use by anyone other than to whom the card was issued. In addition, use of a Metro discount card by anyone other than the person to whom it was issued is considered fraud and is prohibited. Metro will confiscate cards of anyone caught committing fraud and they will be ineligible to participate in the program in the future.

Q: Does this program cover travel on any Metro route?

A: Yes. Students are allowed to use their Metro discount cards to ride any Metro route any time of day on any day of the week, not just to and from Cincinnati State. However, a cash fare of $1 is also needed each time you ride unless you request a transfer for an additional $.50.

Q: What if I lose my Metro discount card?

A: Lost Metro discount cards may be replaced by going to the Cincinnati State Web site and requesting a one-time replacement card. If your card is lost or stolen, Metro will remove it from the system so it can’t be used by anyone else.

 Q: Do I need a transfer?

A: If you need a transfer, you may request one for an additional $.50 when you pay your fare. If you transfer to TANK, you will pay the full TANK fare.  Transfer time lasts for 120 minutes.

 Q: What about Access?

A: The Metro Discount Program applies to Access customers as well. Like Metro, they must be current, active Cincinnati State students and must also be registered Access riders. They will need to go online to register for their Metro discount card.

Once they receive their Metro discount cards, they can go to Web site to order special Access tickets worth $1.50 toward their fare. Then when they ride Access, they must show their valid Metro discount card and give the Access operator an Access ticket. For travel in Zone 1, they must pay $2.00 and $3.00 for travel in Zone 2.

Q: Why is Cincinnati State doing this?

A: Cincinnati State enrollment has been growing over the past years and it is beginning to create traffic and parking issues on campus. Plus, riding the bus saves money compared to driving and it also gives students extra time to study, read or catch up on rest. It’s all part of their desire to make the college experience more affordable and enjoyable for everyone.

Q: What about my regular Metro monthly bus card?

A: You can still get a monthly bus card to ride Metro. It’s up to you to determine if the Metro discount card will provide a better financial benefit to you. It depends on how often you ride the bus and/or whether you want to pay for your transportation costs using financial aid.
