Taking a stand in her seat
In honor of Black History Month, Metro salutes the courage and spirit of Rosa Parks.

The year was 1955. Rosa Parks left work and boarded a city bus for the 15-minute trip home. She took her seat near the front of the bus, in the "white" section. Rosa Parks was black. When she refused to move to the rear of the bus, the city of Montgomery, Alabama had her arrested and jailed.

The bus boycott that followed brought the civil rights movement, and the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to the attention of the nation. This month, we urge you to remember the people who stood with Dr. King and Ms. Parks in the struggle for equal rights. And remember the difference one woman made by refusing to take a back seat on a bus. Photo illustration by Dave Warning.

Our stars are shining
All eyes were on Cincinnati in 1943 when the Hollywood Cavalcade of Stars rode into town on chartered Cincinnati Street Railway buses to promote the sale of war bonds.

Shown outside the Union Terminal, the stars included (left to right) James Cagney, Mickey Rooney, Margie Stewart, Dorothy Merritt, Kay Kyser, Doris Merrick, Paul Henried, Greer Garson, Eddie Buzzell (the show's director), Betty Hutton, Kathryn Grayson, Jose Iturbi, Rosemary LaPlanche, Harpo Marx, Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, Georgia Carroll, Harry Babbitt, Diane Pendleton, Ruth Bardy, Muriel Goodspeed and Dick Powell. Love is in the air
In honor of Valentine's Day, we present this photo of a streetcar on the Rt. 19. The older folks who appear to have just gotten off the streetcar typify the ageless quality of true love that is celebrated each February. This car is shown at the end of the line on Quebec Road; Rt. 19 was one of the last five streetcar lines to operate in the city. From the collection of Phil Lind.
